The other day my favourite men's fashion news source, fashionbeans.com, wrote an article on the definition of cool. It focused on the attitude behind the clothes, and how it was possible for every man to look effortlessly cool. They wrote "The essence of 'cool' is an elusive thing. Nobody quite knows what it is, it has no single agreed upon definition, and yet it is a phenomena that transcends both generations and cultures - it is timeless."
One of the key ingredients it takes to be effortlessly cool is to take fashion risks. No man has gone down in history for being a fashion icon that stuck to trends and never pushed the limits. While it is easier for women to explore different styles and looks without being mocked or feeling like a fool, there are many ways for men to do so as well.
The key to being fashionably experimental without going over the top is to incorporate one brave piece into an outfit at a time. There is no need to wear the jazzy scarf, bright yellow loafers, and hipster spectacles all at once if you're feeling hesitant. In fact, you can even go as far as complimenting a fairly plain and boring look (i.e. blue jeans, black Converse and a grey hoodie) with something jazzy like a bright scarf or bold hat. After a few instances sporting eccentric accessories, you'll have the confidence to do it more and more. The likelihood is that people will start to take notice of your fashionable pieces and compliment you for them; this will only inspire and encourage you to dress outside of the box even more.
Bold piece suggestions include:
1. Hats:
For some men, wearing hats is just part of their look, whether that hat is a toque, a baseball cap, a fedora, or a paperboy hat. For others it feels so unnatural to the point where you think everyone on the street is staring at you. If you're in a shop one day and you see a cool hat that you could wear, just buy it. Sport it one day and see how you feel, if it's really terrible, you can always take it off, but you might surprise yourself.
2. Colours:
This spring/summer forecasts a lot of bright and pastel colours for men, from trousers to shoes, to sweaters. Summer is a good season for both men and women to get a bit experimental with their looks, if you're feeling up for trading in your blue jeans for a light blue pair of chinos go for it. Otherwise start with a cool new pair of coloured loafers or espadrilles and rock the summer island look.
3. Braces:
Let's be honest, unless you're an old-school business man, or a trendy artists you're probably not going to wear braces. An easy look to try however is braces over your white v-neck with jeans and Converse. It won't damage your outfit in any way, but instead add something fun to it.
Why not give all of these looks a try? Come on… live a little.
