It's no secret that first impressions matter. That people do judge a book by its cover and a building by its entrance. Having a grand entrance can make all the difference in the world. Depending on how you want your visitors to feel you may go for something grand, something mystical or something quirky.
Some of the grandest entrances in New York City are:
1. Seagram Building, 375 Park Avenue:
The Seagram Building built in 1958 was the most influential office tower of its time. Its grandness comes first and foremost from the 24-foot ceilings in the lobby, then from its marble floors, and finally its glass ceilings which are the colour of whiskey. The architectural style of the building makes the people in it feel like they are worth something.
2. Time and Life Building, 1271 Avenue of the Americas:
The Time and Life Building is the home of Time Inc. and its magazine empire and has been since 1959. The tower is made out of limestone and glass but is mostly known for its modernist lobby. Famous paintings adorn the lobby's massive walls, including Fritz Glarner's original 40-by-15-foot "Rational Painting #88".
3. Grand Central Station:
Grand Central Station's history dates back to 1863. The new railway station however was completed in 1910. In 1903 a competition was held for its design. The firm of Reed and Stem was chosen and asked to collaborate with Warren and Westmore who were responsible for the architectural details and Beaux-Arts style of the building.
4. The Chatwal Hotel:
This 83 room hotel is housed in a 1905 art deco building which was originally used as a clubhouse for America's first professional theatrical club known as the Lambs. The art deco style has remained intact and now includes an 18th century stone fireplace that is the height of the entire lobby.
5. Church Street Post Office:
This ought to be one of the most iconic post offices in the world. Built in 1937, this building was able to survive the 2001 collapse of the twin towers. The lobby is decorated with black marble columns topped with silver stars. The ceiling in the entrance is made of translucent panels decorated with an art deco version of the 'Great Seal' of the United States.
Another way to create a memorable entrance is to set up a canopy outside of your building. With a beautiful, customised design and the right fabric, building owners are able to create a warm and welcoming effect within a reasonable budget.
