There are times in life when we require coverage. Coverage from the outside world, from its harmful effects or judgemental eyes. We need it for privacy, we need it for protection. Here's a list of different kinds of covers and the things they are protecting us from.
1. Awning:
Awnings are rooflike shelters of fabric that extend over a doorway, from the top of a window or over a deck. They are used as a form of shelter or protection from poor weather or bright sunshine.
2. Camouflage:
Camouflage is a device, strategy or change in appearance which conceals the way we look or behave. Camouflages are traditionally used to deceive an enemy. This may be done by blending oneself into the background or by creating fake obstacles to distract the enemy. Camouflages protect people from, what is often, serious danger.
3. Façade:
A façade is the name given to the front of a building, or any side facing the public. Facades also refer to superficial appearances or illusions. For instance someone who tries to maintain a certain appearance despite the fact that it is not the truth ie. a person who pretends to be wealthy but is not. People use facades to protect themselves from what they perceive as the judgement of others.
4. Masquerade:
Masquerades are a type of facades whereupon people cover their faces with masks to conceal their true identity. Human nature has proven that when our true identity is masked we often behave differently than how we normally would. Often we are braver and less inhibited. Masquerades also refer to parties where everyone is required to come disguised in a mask.
5. Veil:
A veil can be anything that covers, separates, screens or conceals, such as a veil of smoke or even the veil of death. Veils are most often associated with brides, nuns, and Islamic women. For a bride a veil acts as the separation between her and her husband, until they are married and he lifts it to give her a kiss. For nuns and Islamic women they act as a protection from the outside world. They conceal the face of the woman so that she does not tempt men to do non-virtuous things.
6. Dress:
Dresses (and clothing in general) conceal the naked bodies of people. People have covered their bodies in clothing since the days of Adam and Eve. It began with leaves and whatever bits of nature could be assembled and since turned into an enormous industry of its own- fashion. Fashion has become more than just something to cover ourselves with, but something to define ourselves by.
Whether we are looking to protect ourselves from our enemies, from embarrassment or from ourselves, we all need cover-ups.
