Everyone is talking about digital. Social media is a term that comes up in conversation all the time, PPC, SEO and CRM, acronyms that you can almost assume everyone understands. And it's all happened so quickly. Today there are an enormous amount of jobs that a few years ago would have never even existed. Agencies are springing up all over the world combining various types of experience to offer clients everything from programming to search marketing to copywriting services. Industries are bending over backgrounds to keep up with the times, which means, adjusting their business model, hiring specialists and doing it all quickly enough to not miss out or fall behind the rest of the market.
People with three years experience in digital are considered experts. So what does this all mean for you?
1. If you're a start-up agency:
If you're a start-up digital agency, it means that you've recognised a big opportunity to do something few, although it seems like everyone, is doing. You can start developing your expertise, find a niche that you want to tackle and assemble a team of talented people who can help you tackle it. While some sceptical clients might look at you with an unconvinced gaze and say "you've only been doing this three years", they will quickly learn that that means you have the background knowledge to know what your talking about and the fresh mind to do something innovative with it.
2. If you're a digital expert:
If you are one of the ones who fairly early on recognized that you loved digital and have been pursuing jobs in it for the past few years, odds are you've acquired a set of skills few people have, which means you're going to have your pick of pretty cool jobs, that generally after a few years experience you wouldn't be able to get. Be strategic about your decision and think about how you can combine cool projects, with working for a company with a real future.
3. If you're a junior employee:
If three years make you a digital expert, than one year makes you pretty good. Grads who have found themselves in digital positions over the last year or so should recognize the need for them in the industry. Sure you still have a little ladder to climb, but the emphasis is on the word 'little'. If you are eager to learn about the way the industry works and are a creative person who enjoys playing with the tools and conceptualising ideas, then there is a lot of room for you in this growing industry.
Digital is not only an industry in itself, but something that has become a part of every industry and is only growing. If you've got your toes in its water, I recommend keeping them in there.
