There are a number of ways to deliver a marketing message and retain new customers via online marketing. These include Search Engine Optimisation, Paid Search ads, emails, banner ads, spam, and social media marketing.
Smart brands are now creating unique marketing campaigns for specific social media platforms. By understanding who uses these platforms and how they use them, they are able to design and address their campaign.
Volkswagen Passat for instance realises that their car is driven primarily by business people. They therefore decided to create an online marketing campaign on LinkedIn, a social media site used by over 100 million professionals to exchange information, ideas and opportunities. How is this exchange made? First by users creating a detailed profile that is inclusive of all of their professional experience and interests. Volkswagen has played into the format of LinkedIn by "reminding people that its seriously packed full of standard features, just like most peoples LinkedIn profiles." The competition is specifically for the Netherlands, where the person with the strongest LinkedIn profile wins a brand new Volkswagen Passat. Profiles are judged on education, experience, recommendations and connections. Digital Buzz Blog who reported on this campaign correctly acknowledges that "the power of this plays to the competitive corporate nature of most humans!"
Desperados Beer YouTube campaign was another one featured in Digital Buzz this month. It went beyond the usual entertainment of marketing on YouTube and really engaged and interacted with users. As a beer company, they were able to obtain additional information about their visitors by asking them if they were of legal age to drink (therefore requiring that they put in their date of birth). They also asked if people were wanting to party and then invited them in to a house party where people were seen talking and drinking. There are then opportunities to link to Facebook and other social media platforms. A small house party then opens up to a big loft party, which then gets taken outside to the streets. The campaign puts people in the mood to party, excites them about the beer and about the brand in general.
With so many social media platforms to use, with so many tools to play with, there are few boundaries when it comes to online marketing. And like most forms of advertising, the more innovative the campaign the more credit goes to the brand. Consumer brands in many ways are bought as much for their associations and interactive experiences as they are for their price, product or positioning.
