Coco Chanel, one of history's greatest fashion designers, once said "fashion fades, only style remains the same." Fashion journalists often write about the difference between fashion and style, where fashion is something temporary, something physical, whereas style is a state of being. To have style isn't to have nice, trendy clothes, it's to embody a sense of confidence, to see things and wear them in your own way whilst looking good. Any person can go to the shops and buy everything currently on trend, but that doesn't make them stylish. So what does make someone stylish?

1. Having confidence:

Confidence is the most important thing to wear at all times. No matter what you have on, if you're wearing it with confidence you are exhibiting an element of style. For instance some people might think that buttons aren't cool. But if you decorate the pockets of your military coat with a series of colourful buttons, roll up its sleeves and pop its collar, you could make buttons very cool. Confidence is also in the way you walk, the way you talk and the way you hold yourself. If you're acting like you look amazing, people around you are more likely to think you look amazing.

2. Adding your own flare:

Part of having style is to make every look you wear, unique and personal in some way. Have you ever seen a guy walking down the street in jeans and white t-shirt and still thought that his look was somewhat unique? The reason for this might be, the way he rolled his t-shirt sleeves, the jewellery he had on, or the specific rips in his jeans. A woman who chooses to pair her flowy, silk, white maxi dress with a shearling jacket or a grandfather sweater is adding her own flare to a look and therefore making it her own.

3. Daring to be different:

It tends to be that the world's most stylish people are also the ones who take a lot of fashion risks. Bear in mind that not every risk you take is going to work out. Sometimes we go overboard or think something is attractive or cool that really just isn't. But those who don't try also don't succeed. If you think something is worth wearing, wear it, who knows you might even start a whole new trend.

Making a look your own is as much how you wear your clothes as it is what you're wearing.
