Have you ever walked into a room, looked up and all around you and thought to yourself, wow a lot of love, care and effort went into creating this room? There are few places where this is more true than in old churches. Because for so long, society was divided into church and state, generous funding was often given to churches by the government to build the most beautiful temples. But when you enter these buildings today you notice much more than the funding, you notice the love, care and dedication that went in to build something so beautiful. It is humbling to see how much people will do to honour their gods and beliefs.
Prague has some extremely beautiful churches where this sense of admiration is certainly felt. A few noteworthy ones are:
1. The Church of St. Nicholas:
St. Nicholas church is in the old town of Prague. It was designed by Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer and completed in 1735. Antonin Braun made the sculptures that live within the church. The interior was inspired by the chapel of St. Louis-des-invalides in Paris. The high ceilings are covered in paintings of biblical stories depicting gods, apostles, cherubs, battle scenes and more. It is a place of great beauty.
2. St. Vitus Cathedral:
The Prague Castle is where the Kings of Bohemia, Holy Roman Emperors and the presidents of the Czech Republic have their head offices. It is a spectacular sight with vast, gorgeous grounds in which tourists are permitted to freely walk around and explore. There are a few churches on the premises including St. Vitus Cathedral. St. Vitus Cathedral is long, tall and narrow. The ceilings aren't painted but arched and very grand. One of the most impressive things about this particular cathedral are the stunning stained glass mosaic windows. They are tall and filled with the most beautiful colours of the rainbow.
3. Tyn Church:
Tyn Church is located in the Old Town Square of Prague. Inside and out it embodies the predominant gothic architectural style of the city, with a black roof and a black and gold interior. Again, it has extremely high ceilings which immediately evoke a feeling of smallness, heavens, and devotion.
Evidently, putting your heart and soul into creating something beautiful goes a long way. And there are a few building features which have very powerful effects, such as high ceilings, tall windows, grand doors, and moving colours. When creating a new space, it is worth it to invest some time and energy and create something memorable. Make the room look bigger and bolder.
