Outsourcing refers to the use of outside firms to handle work normally performed within a company. Outsourcing is something often practiced by small businesses. With limited personnel, small businesses have to look outside to find the expertise required. This is often the case for jobs such as accounting, payroll and distribution. For larger businesses, outsourcing is typically done to cut costs. It's much more financially sound to pay a specialist for a particular job then it is to hire someone full time and have to pay their benefits, holiday and annual salary.

The benefits of outsourcing work both ways for the company and the expert. People with a developed passion are often inclined to work for themselves on a freelance basis. An advantage of freelance work, is that you have the opportunity to work with a range of clients, which typically means that work doesn't get too repetitive. However, depending on how well-connected you are, it can also mean that you face very dry periods without much work and therefore income. Those specialists interested in working freelance are best off first working for a few companies in their field. Not only will they get the proper training and make themselves more credible, but they will begin to acquire a list of names who they could eventually make contact with. Moreover, if you leave your job on good terms, it is very likely that they will continue to use you for jobs.

In addition to saving costs, companies have the benefit of using actual experts. When you outsource you are hiring people who perform this particular function every day, across a large list of clients. This means that they know what they're talking about. They have case studies that prove what works and what doesn't. For a job like marketing this can be very helpful. A lot of companies do their own marketing in-house. They hire marketing people to make these decisions and who have a budget to spend. While some of them may do very good work, it can be a disservice to your company to do all marketing activities in-house. Without the knowledge of marketing trends and what other companies are up to, one's vision can become slightly tunnelled. Independent marketing agencies are required to keep up with such trends, and as mentioned, have experience working with a range of clients and know what is effective marketing.

In these respects, outsourcing is always a good idea, you get the best minds for often a cheaper price.
