Every seen a circus act where a gymnast comes tumbling down from the ceiling, her body unwinding in a length of fabric? It's quite a site.
Fabric ceiling decorations are not limited to the circus. Fabric accents can add a theatrical element or an elegant one to a ceiling. It can give it shape, dimension and texture.
Wedding venues are full of fabric. Draped fabric, tied fabric, styled fabric. They are the perfect occasion for experimenting with fabric arrangements.
When working with fabric, colour is very important. There are some multi-tone fabrics that look nice, but a lot of them are solid colours, which can be quite intense. It's safest to go with a white or cream or perhaps even a sheer or shimmery colour like silver or champagne. Another great effect to keep in mind, is projecting images or colour onto fabric. This great for photographic slide shows or colour fading.
Incorporating lights or light shows into your fabric ceilings can add a beautiful and almost magic touch. Projecting lights upwards in shapes or intervals makes the feel and space of the room change constantly which can be quite cool. Embedding, small light bulbs, the size of those seen on Christmas trees, can give a twinkling effect.
Other types of ceilings include:
Cathedral:
Cathedral ceilings are generally stripped down to wood. Their beauty however, is in their height, shape and slant. One of the most attractive features of a cathedral ceiling is its beams. Not every cathedral ceiling has beams, but when they do it adds an extra touch of character. Often it gives that country attic or studio feel to a room, which can make it very warm.
Textured ceilings:
If you're stuck with a ceiling that's low and flat and you're looking for a way to give it a bit more character you might want to add a bit of texture. Adding some three-dimensional stripes or patterns can make a big difference, even if it's white on white. Sometimes adding colour can be too intense, so this is a good option.
Lighting:
Hanging light fixtures can centre a room. If they're big they can actually take over its focal point. Choosing a light fixture is no easy task. You must first think about the style of the room and how your choice of light fixture will fit in. For instance it may seem obvious to hang a modern light fixture in a modern room, but what about hanging one in a more classic room? Perhaps light fixtures are your way of splashing out and adding another dimension or feel to a room?
Ceilings should not be neglected. From fabric to lighting, think about your space and do something wonderful with it.
