If you are a business owner, no matter how small, nowadays it is essential to have a website. A website is where people go to find out information about who you are and what you do. They go there to learn how to contact you and to keep up-to-date with your general activities, including events, news, promotions and more.
But what about individuals? Do they need websites too? If you are a freelancer, than yes, you need a website, because essentially you are a small business owner. You must have a place to exhibit the work you've done and prices you charge. But I'm not referring to freelancers, I am referring to individuals who work or study full time, do they need websites?
If you are someone who has work that you'd like to make available publicly then it might be worth starting a website. Work doesn't necessarily mean items you've been hired and paid to do, but rather things you have chosen to do for your own pleasure. If you are a writer for instance, you might create a website where people can log on and read some of your short stories, poems, or digital serials. You might also include book reviews, and maybe even collaborate with publishers or book retailers whereby you can offer discounts on their items via your site, or link to their blogs via yours.
With people creating so many social media accounts, a personal website is also a good roof under which to link to them all. I don't think it's necessary for everyone with a Facebook and Twitter account to have their own website, but perhaps someone who usese Twitter to share information about digital technology, Facebook to connect with friends and market their blog, a Wordpress blog on a certain subject, and a YouTube channel where they have uploaded videos that they have written, produced and stared in, perhaps they would need a website. This way, each of their verticals has its own space which has been nicely organized in a way that truly represents the individual and all of their interests and work.
Moreover, a website might be a place to upload your CV or information you believe prospective employers, clients, or even peers would benefit from having at their disposal.
There are some great tools currently available online as well as website creation sites that are extremely to use. A personal website doesn't have to be big or glamorous, it can be as simple as a static page or two, as long as it represents you in the right light.
